They are usually open for all arriving flights. There are two banks inside the airport terminal that will exchange dollars and major European currencies, and will cash traveler's checks. Most airport taxis, shuttles, and major hotels will accept dollars upon your arrival, so it's not absolutely essential to exchange money before traveling to Guatemala. Criminals are often looking for foreigners who have just withdrawn or exchanged cash. TIP: The quetzal is practically worthless outside of Guatemala so spend any money that you have exchanged before leaving the country.Hotels will often exchange money as well there usually isn't much of a line, but they might shave a few centavos off the exchange rate. Spend the extra money to stay at a nice hotel with good security in Guatemala City. Check out the US State Department's Travel Advisory on Guatemala. Thefts and robberies are an issue in the country but the worst in Guatemala City. Once out of Guatemala City prices drop a lot. Expect to pay at least 60- 80 quetzales per person fora meal in a three star restaurant. Avoid!ĭespite its location the cost of hotels and meals in Guatemala City are not as cheap as pther Central American countries. Occassionally a lot of hustlers selling trinkets or offering taxi rides on the cheap. Outside of the terminal is another world. Inside the terminal is very safe and comfortable. I just don't know where so ask in the terminal. The La Aurora International Airport is very modern and clean and I am sure there is an ATM machine there. I would exchange cash inside of a bank that keeps their ATM inside. Their currency is the quetzal and the current rate of exchange is kust under 8 quetzalles for each US dollar. It has been a while since I have been in Guatemala.
